Two Lao Girls With Red Scarfs by Jo Ann Tomaselli
While visiting a school in Laos where young Hmong children attend classes, I had the pleasure of meeting several of them while they were on a break from their lessons. These 2 girls, although keeping their distance, continued to follow me around. As I emerged from the bathroom, they were standing outside holding hands. I motioned to my camera and indicated that I'd like to take their picture. The day was beautiful and the school room wall, washed in beautiful morning light, provided the perfect backdrop for their fresh, young faces, their white school shirts and their red scarves. What I hadn't anticipated was upon bringing my camera to eye level to compose the shot, the two of them spontaneously lifted their arms over their heads to touch hands, top & bottom, forming a perfect heart.
