BUDDHIST INITIATION PHOTOGRAPH BY JO ANN TOMASELLI

I wish you could hear the chanting recording of I made of this ancient, amazing ceremony of a young boy being initiated into the Buddhist Monkhood. It was just past dawn as I wandered the ancient hallways of the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia. Other tourists stood outside the palace taking photographs of a sunrise that failed to make an appearance. I had been there also but every time I set up my camera and tripod in a prime location, someone would take a position in front of me. Frustrated, I set off and headed into the Angkor Wat complex and that's how I happened upon this private ceremony away from the bustling crowds. In Cambodia, young boys are obligated to serve two years as a monk. They do this in honor of their parents. After their initial service, the boys can leave but many decide to stay and make this their lifes calling. In this image the older monk in the orange robe is shaving the last lock of hair from the young initiates head as the other monks chant. Family members are gathered to pray and present gifts to the elders who will now care for the boy in the temple.
