Description
Orton Plantation Scenic Walkway, Brusnwick County, NC by Jo Ann Tomaselli
The Orton Plantation was once a premier rice plantation on the Southeast branch of the Cape Fear River. On the forested grounds walkways meander throughout the gardens that surround the plantation house constructed in 1735. The variety of botanical beauty is evedent in each season with the highlights arriving in spring and summer. Upon arriving at the property, one drives through a tunnel of Live Oak trees. A stroll through the landscape offers forests, grass lawns and colorful gardens of azelias, rhodedendrum and day lilys. A view beyond the trees offers marsh grass boardering the Cape Fear River; it is here where the rice used to grow, before the river was infiltarated with salt from the Atlantic Ocean.
The plantation, sold by the Laurence Sprut family in 2010, was bought by Louis Moore Bacon, a direct descendant of Roger Moore, the origional owner. Bacon wants to grow rice on the land by 2014 for the first time since 1931. He also wants the National Registtry designantion to include the rice fielsd, and for the plantaion to become a Nationl Historic Landmark. I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit when this beautiful property was open to the public.
