On the day this image was taken on Topsail Island, NC, I was up early to walk the beach with my friend. She is a volunteer with a Turtle Watch group, one of many that operate on the barrier islands from Wrightsville beach to Figure Eight and Topsail Island. One must be on the beach before vacationers' footprints disturb the sand, an essential condition when scouting for evidence of turtle tracks left by female turtles who have laid their eggs during the night. It was lovely being awake and feeling productive at 5 am, even if I was a bit more involved with my camera than scouting for turtle tracks.
I was not surprised to see that we were not the only ones out early on this beautiful summer morning. As I turned to see if the sun had risen, I found an amazing orange & yellow sky, streaked with clouds. The local fishing pier, a massive structure of wood, pilings, railings, lights & local seagulls was silhouetted against a beautiful daybreak. One lone fisherman, pulling his cart filled with fishing poles, hooks & bait slowly made his way to the end of the pier as the ocean waves rolled to shore beneath him. Redfish, Bluefish, Trout, Flounder. I imagine whatever he hooked on his line this day will make for a delicious dinner!
